Testing and the Doman method

Doman’s advice about testing, praising and bragging about a child

THE DOMAN METHOD AND TESTING

However it may sound, Glenn Doman in all his books I mentioned in the Must-have section, states clearly that we shouldn’t test our children to check if they have acquired the material we presented or not. According to him, when we test them their eagerness to learn is impeded. He uses a beautiful metaphor to illustrate this: “To teach a child is to give him a delightful gift. To test him is to demand payment in advance.” This means we push a child before he or she is able and willing to show us how much he or she knows. Indeed, the fact that we shouldn’t put any pressure on our child should be uppermost in our minds.

Maths with a baby

Next step in Doman’s maths programme – numerals (Maja is 17,5 months old)

THE EARLIER, THE BETTER

The maths set with dot cards contains a small manual. It says there that after we complete the part of the maths programme based on dot cards, we can wait with introducing numerals until nursery school. We can, of course, but we don’t have to. We have already started numerals as Doman doesn’t say anything like that in his book: “How to Teach Your Baby Math.”

Doing roots with a baby

Going beyond Doman’s ideas with teaching maths to a baby – introducing roots (Maja is 16 months old)

TEACH YOUR BABY MATHS

ROOTS

This all Doman stuff must sound crazy to you and it sounds crazy to me, too. However, I do not belong to a group of traditional mums and I need something more so I decided to give it a try. I am really curious to know if it really works. Being a crazy and, at the same time, well-organized mum I have already completed all Doman’s suggestions on teaching maths to a baby. What now? Let’s make it even crazier.

I have already gone beyond Doman’s ideas – I introduced percentages. Let’s do roots now. It certainly won’t do any harm because I can’t imagine how looking at maths may be harmful. Certainly, it will stimulate my baby’s brain contributing to its growth.

PERCENTAGES  WITH A BABY

I have completed all Doman’s suggestions as far as teaching maths to a baby is concerned. But don’t worry – this is not the end. Doman encourages parents to be creative and to follow their imagination when it comes to all sorts of ideas related to dot flashcards. I have assumed that if fractions can be taught using dot cards we can use them to teach lots of other mathematical stuff like percentages, roots and exponents or powers …. and maybe I will come up with something else.

Maths by Doman

July 2017 – simple algebra with a baby, enriching a baby’s vocabulary and a whole-word reading programme with self-made books (Maja is 15 months old)

MATHS

SIMPLE ALGEBRA WITH A VARIABLE QUANTITY REPRESENTED BY A LETTER

Since my last post we have completed the last of Doman’s suggestions – equations with a variable.  Following his suggestion included in the book „How to Teach Your Baby Math,” I replaced the letter “x” commonly used as a variable with the letter “y.” This was necessary because the letter “x” is similar to the multiplication sign and this may confuse a baby.

WHOLE-WORD READING PROGRAMME BY DOMAN

WE HAVE OFFICIALLY COMPLETED ALL THE SIGHT WORDS FLASHCARDS

In the previous post I said that I had started doing less and less daily “sessions,” which also means having less and less cards per day. After a few days we were left with 3 sets, 5 cards in each instead of our usual 4 sets. I decided we would manage to do these although nothing had changed in Maja’s attitude.
